US rights reports lauds Burma

Burma held up as example of positive change in a world convulsed by uprisings By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' After years of denouncing Burma's human rights record, the State Department is holding it up as an example of reform in a world convulsed by citizen uprisings.

The department's annual report on human rights notes change afoot in the Asian nation as it moves toward "greater openness, democracy and liberty." Though it says more needs to be done, the report expresses the hope that progress in the country, also known as Myanmar, will inspire change in other closed societies like Iran, North Korea, Uzbekistan, Eritrea, or Sudan.

It also notes that uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa have sent rumblings around the world, with millions of people in other countries demanding more rights, economic opportunity and a say in their governments.
