WASHINGTON (AP) ' A senior U.S. defense official has held talks in Myanmar on possible resumption of remains recovery of U.S. soldiers lost in the country during World War II.
The Defense Department said Friday that Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Bob Newberry led the interagency delegation to begin policy negotiations on the issue.
There are approximately 730 Americans unaccounted for in Myanmar, mostly U.S. air crews lost in the north of the country during the war.
The last recovery operation took place in 2004.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called for their resumption when she made a landmark visit to Myanmar in December.
Washington is stepping up its engagement with the government in response to reforms after decades of military rule.
