US govt: Other targets eyed before NYC subway plot

Prosecutors say al-Qaida operative discussed other NYC targets before settling on subways By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' Prosecutors say a New York City man accused of becoming an al-Qaida operative discussed bombing movie theaters, Grand Central Terminal, Times Square and the New York Stock Exchange before settling on the city's subways.

Adis Madunjanin (ah-DEES' may-DOON'-yah-neen) went on trial Monday in Brooklyn in connection with the alleged 2009 plot.

Defense attorney Robert Gottlieb accused the government of using "inflammatory rhetoric" about al-Qaida and terrorism to prevent jurors "from seeing the truth about this case."

Meanwhile, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service disclosed that it has struck a rare deal with a convicted terrorist to offer evidence in Medunjanin's trial.

Saajid Badat was jailed in Britain in 2005 for his role in a 2001 plot to down an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami with explosives hidden in shoes.
