US court allows Edwards to hire mistress's lawyersUS judge allows John Edwards to add lawyers who represented his mistress for his criminal case
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ' Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards is changing lawyers a month before his criminal trial, adding attorneys who represented his mistress in a lawsuit over the couple's alleged sex tape.
Edwards told federal Judge Catherine Eagles on Thursday he wanted to hire lawyers Alan Duncan and Allison Van Laningham. They represented Edwards' mistress Rielle Hunter in a lawsuit settled last month with a deal that all copies of the tape would be destroyed.
Eagles said the two new lawyers couldn't cross-examine Hunter if prosecutors made her a witness.
Prosecutors said Hunter could be called to testify about how she was hidden after getting pregnant during Edwards' presidential campaign in 2008. Edwards is accused of violating campaign finance laws by using nearly $1 million from wealthy donors to hide the scandal.
