UNITED NATIONS (AP) ' The U.N. human rights chief is calling on people around the world to build on the momentum for change started by the Arab Spring, noting that social media such as Twitter can help them fight for their rights.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay says power in the Arab world has shifted in 2011, with average men, women and even children standing up to long-ruling dictators.
In a message issued Friday on the eve of Human Rights Day, Pillay is noting how Facebook and other social media platforms have been used during protests against officials in Egypt and other countries.
The U.N. is making broad use of social media to mark the 63rd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on Saturday.
