Trollbäck + Company Creates Opening Titles for Capote

Trollbäck + Company (, an Emmy-Winning creative studio whose feature film title designs include award-winning openings for Vanity Fair and Monsoon Wedding, recently completed the meticulously spare opening titles for Capote, the United Artists/Sony Pictures Classics film about Truman Capote, the controversial author of the seminal “non-fiction novel,” In Cold Blood.  For the biopic, directed by Bennett Miller, Trollbäck + Co. created a deliberately frugal and quiet opening sequence — boldly empty of any glitz —using only sparse white type on black. Capote, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role, opens September 30 in New York and Los Angeles. 

“We initially came up with a series of graphic approaches, but ultimately chose to strip down even these subtle devices in favor of an extremely distilled sequence,” explained Tolga Yildiz, designer for Trollbäck + Company.  “We didn’t want any graphic interpretations to raise unnecessary questions at the film’s open. It was imperative to let the film’s story unfold without crowding or re-orienting it in any way.” 

A sense of haunting emptiness is achieved through the neutral white Letter Gothic type set against black, with unhurried all-black intervals. The typeface was chosen to loosely resemble a typewriter font without being overtly recognizable and to suit both the film’s 1950’s setting and its contemporary audience. Strikingly restrained in an era of flashy main title sequences, the “un-designed” graphics underline the film’s core themes of objectivity and journalism.  Accompanied by Mychael Danna's muted piano score, the slowly fading titles set an achingly somber and subdued backdrop for the unsettling narrative. 

“It’s all about knowing when to not overpower the opening,” added Jakob Trollbäck, president of Trollbäck + Company.  “The opening photography provides a mesmerizing opening sequence that we didn’t want to interfere with.” 

The film is an official selection of the 2005 New York Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival.

Trollbäck + Company, which has won a Prime Time Emmy Award and two Emmy Nominations for Outstanding Main Title Design, is currently creating opening titles for an upcoming original HBO series. Trollbäck + Company also recently conceived, designed, and produced the massive ambient Court TV campaign that turned New York City taxis into ‘getaway cars’ and phone kiosks into ‘lookouts.’ The project coincides with Trollbäck + Company’s complete on-air re-branding of Court TV.


Trollbäck + Company is a bicoastal creative studio committed to generating innovative visual and branding solutions.
