Trial looms in Fla. burning attack on teenBurning attack on Fla. teen alters lives forever, with trial looming for alleged ringleader
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) ' Trial is set to begin next week for the accused ringleader in a horrific 2009 attack on a South Florida middle school student by several classmates.
Other boys involved in the case have told authorities Matthew "Zeke" Bent was behind the attack in which rubbing alcohol was poured on then-15-year-old Michael Brewer before he was set on fire. Brewer survived but suffered second- and third-degree burns over two-thirds of his body.
Two other teenagers have pleaded no contest and are scheduled to testify against Bent, now 17. Legal experts say the defense will try to show that Bent gave no orders and took no physical actions against Brewer.
Brewer told police he had a dispute with Bent over a $40 video game and an attempt to steal a bike.
