TriMedia and Meicom Deliver Real Time MPEG-2 Software Encoder

(September 17, 2001)
TriMedia Technologies Inc. and Meicom Technologies announced a technology alliance. TriMedia is introducing Meicom's MPEG-2 real-time encoder software for its 32-bit media processor to offer high-quality media compression. In addition, Meicom joins the TriMedia Alliance Partner Program (TAPP) in order to quickly and efficiently bring the MPEG-2 product to market.

Growing use of digital media is generating new requirements for advanced technologies. The combination of Meicom's MPEG-2 encoder software with TriMedia's 32-bit media processor provides tremendous advantages in low resource consumption, computation speed, flexibility and time-to-market. Specifically, the software package offers an excellent image in various bit rates, including 1Mbps to 6Mbps. The image's resolution is 640x480 with 30 frames per second. In addition, it is well suited for portable Internet appliances, as well as compact digital media players. Meicom's MPEG-2 software on the TriMedia platform is primarily targeted for set-top box and other digital video recording applications.

With over 15 partners in TAPP such as Mentor Graphics Corp., Tality and WindRiver, TriMedia is building a network of companies that enable rich audio, video, graphics and communications while shortening development cycle times.

Proven IP
The TriMedia 32-bit embedded processor, of which the TM32 is the latest implementation, has served as the computational heart for a series of embedded processor products. The IP is designed for easy, seamless integration into system-on-a-chip (SOC) products and supports a standard real-time operating system (RTOS). The TriMedia VLIW architecture is ideally suited for performance-hungry media processing tasks, such as encoding/decoding MPEG video streams, encoding/decoding multi-channel audio streams, or demultiplexing/multiplexing broadcast transport streams and is currently used in more than 100 products. The architecture processes five operations per clock cycle, yet eliminates the costly control logic typical of superscalar processors.

This new MPEG-2 technology alliance will debut at the IBC tradeshow Sept. 14th - 18th at TriMedia's Partner Pavilion in Hall 12, booth # 339.
