Total Training: Advanced Adobe After Effects 7.0 Pro Broadcast Design Secrets Reviewed

Dean Velez training reveals strategies By Stephen Schleicher

Total Training has released many new training DVD for Adobe After Effects 7.0.  In the Broadcast Design Secrets title, you not only learn methods for creating fantastic looking titles and logo treatments, you learn them from Dean Velez.

Dean Velez is an AE Pro.  For years he has been a broadcast designer for some of the biggest television stations in Atlanta, GA, has done work for major sports teams, and was the Corporate Creative Director of Broadcasting for Gannett Broadcasting.  He worked for Adobe Systems creating the background animation presets in the latest 7.0 release, and is now part of the Total Training team serving as Creative Director.  In other words, he knows what he is talking about, and spending a few hours learning from a master is something some designers would spend a fortune to do.

Luckily, you dont have to spend a fortune to learn from Velez.  In his first training DVD from Total Training he gives the viewer a glimpse into creating professional looking animations quickly and easily using Adobe After Effects.

The training comes on two discs; the first is composed of sixteen video tutorials broken into three parts.  In part one, you learn how to create a professional style weather bumper that can be used in news, or as a weather alert intro.  In this lesson, you learn how to start in Adobe Photoshop to rough out the design, the animate it in After Effects.  Part two demonstrates how to create an opening title sequence for a television or movie, and in part three, Dean walks you through creating a corporate identity piece.  The second disc contains all of the files needed for the projects.

Regardless of your comfort level with After Effects, Deans smooth style and creative approach to design will boost your skills to a new level.  At the very least you will pick up a few quick tips and power moves you didnt know before.

Unfortunately, if you have been following Dean Valez for a while and many After Effects users have because of his involvement in forums and online communities, you will quickly see the projects in this DVD are exactly the same tutorials he has been selling on his site for the last three years.  In fact, the Web of Deceit is freely available on another forum site floating around the web.

Still if you havent read those free tutorials, and if you havent already purchased the Anvel Series (quite worth the money), then this is a great start into understanding how a designer begins to create those fantastic intros, bumpers and more.

For everything that is contained in the Broadcast Design Secrets $149 may sound like a good deal, and it certainly is if you have not signed up for Deans Anvel training.  However, considering the repurposing of content, Total Training could have knocked $50 off the price, making a $99 title within easy reach of learners.

As much as I like the quality of Total Training products and as talented as Dean Velez is, I have to give this title a 3 out of 5 Stars.
