Top 12 Highest Rated LCD Computer Monitors

An even dozen top user rated LCD monitors By Guy Wright

Sooner or later youre going to be in the market for a new computer monitor and these days LCD monitors are the way to go. They are lightweight, slim and trim (to save precious desktop real estate), and deliver crisp, clean, distortion-free images.

We pulled together a list of the 12 top rated active matrix LCD monitors rated by users who own them and if you are in the market for a new monitor you cant go wrong with one of these models.

When shopping for an LCD monitor the key points to look for are native resolution, brightness, contrast ratio, and response time. Be sure to set your computers resolution to that of the monitor (or as close as your graphic card can get) since the monitor has to convert all incoming signals to its native resolution and the more it has to convert the less efficient it is. Brightness and contrast ratios are important when using the monitor in a bright or even a reasonably well-lit environment. Response time (how quickly the monitor can refresh the screen lower is better) is important if you plan to watch video on the monitor or when playing games since slower response times can cause ?smearing on fast moving graphics.

Another thing to keep in mind when shopping for an LCD is that different manufacturers have different policies about dealing with ?dead pixels. A dead pixel is one that is frozen in an always on (white) or always off (black) state. Some manufacturers have a ?zero dead pixels policy which means they will replace the monitor if there are any dead pixels while other manufacturers consider anything up to three or four dead pixels as acceptable (while you may not). And even if a manufacturer is willing to replace a monitor with dead pixels there may be re-stocking and shipping fees.

Finally, while LCD displays have come a long way in the past few years their color reproduction is still not quite as good as an old fashioned CRT tube-style monitor. If you spend a lot of time working with video or real-world images such as digital photography then you might consider sticking with a CRT since they can provide better color reproduction (assuming they are properly calibrated).
