Tool Of North America Adds Sam Jones to Directorial Roster(November 11, 2004)
Leading commercial production company Tool of North America today announced the addition of acclaimed photographer, filmmaker and commercial director Sam Jones to its roster for exclusive U.S. representation. The announcement was made by Jones and Tool's managing director Phillip Detchmendy.
Represented on the east coast by Meredith Bergman, the west coast by Stephanie Stephens and in the midwest by Dawn Rao, the deal also earns Jones representation in Canada via Toronto's Imported Artists Film Company and in France via Tool's association with Entropie Films in Paris.
As a youngster growing up in Fullerton, Calif., Jones' strong interests in skateboarding and music quickly led him to photography. Over the past several years, his portraits of George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Elle McPherson, Renee Zellweger and others have graced covers and spreads in Esquire, GQ, Premiere, Rolling Stone, Time and Vanity Fair, to name but a few. Having also shot national print campaigns for the likes of HBO, Hugo Boss, Lincoln and Universal, in 2000, Jones joined the directorial roster of Santa Monica's Fusion Films. There, he helmed national spots for Borges, Commonwealth Edison, Heal the Bay, Safeco and Union Bank of California, and he also co-produced, directed and filmed the acclaimed documentary "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart." After a brief stint with Blink USA where he directed a Discover Card campaign for Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco, Jones landed with Tool.
"I've known about Tool forever," Jones began, "and when I decided to leave Blink, they were on a very short list of production companies that I admire very much for their stability, size, and variety of directors. A conversation with Phillip about bike racing, and a conversation with Eric about car racing and surfing made me realize I was in the right place! In all seriousness, they have some of the most creative, smart directors in the world, and I am excited to be a part of that."
"When Sam and I met, we immediately hit it off," added Detchmendy. "I am constantly looking at reels and his work really grabbed me. His print work shows a very strong and original point of view, and I couldn't stop watching his documentary for Wilco. I also find his commercial work to be very compelling. Taking all the elements together, it feels like a very obvious and exciting choice."
In regards to his upcoming directorial assignments, Jones says, "I'm looking for boards that tell stories. I'm very interested in film and taking the things that I do and developing them in a path that includes more character development and more story art within a 30-second spot. I'm always blown away by spots that make you feel like you've gotten to know a character a little bit. I'm looking for work like that."
Jones' first assignment for Tool will be for a new round of Discover Card spots for Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco.
