Tom Lord-Alge Selects Blue Skys 5.1 Sky System One

Used for surround mix of Sarah McLachlan live concert DVD (December 06, 2004)

Blue Skys acclaimed Sky System One monitors were recently installed, in a 5.1 configuration, at South Beach Studios in Miami for a truly landmark recording project. Three-time Grammy Award-winning mixer Tom Lord-Alge completed a 5.1 surround mix of celebrated singer/composer Sarah McLachlans forthcoming CD/DVD release, Afterglow Live. The mix is an occasion to remember for all involved: it was Tom Lord-Alges first surround music mixing project.

Lord-Alge, who has done highly praised mixes for artists including Avril Lavigne, Blink 182, Switchfoot, Marilyn Manson and Weezer, to name just a very few, took a unique approach to the surround mix. According to Joe Galdo, President of South Beach Studios and a well-regarded producer himself, Lord-Alge created multiple ?stems ? sections of each song ? on the SSL 4064 console in South Beachs main studio. He then took these stems to the facilitys upstairs Pro Tools|HD suite where he assembled and mixed them.

Key to the process was the selection of the Blue Sky 5.1 Sky System One monitoring system. The system was recommended to Galdo by Mike Harris, of Miami-based Harris Audio Systems. ?It was the moment that South Beach Studios and Tom were about to make the jump to surround music mixing, and I felt that the Blue Sky monitors represented exactly what both a studio executive and a great mixer want: theyre great-sounding speakers available at a very cost-effective price, remarks Harris.

Galdo agrees: ?Working with guys from Audio One and with [studio designer] Ross Alexander, Tom set the speakers up and they were very careful to make it as perfect as possible. He notes that signal distribution to the Blue Sky monitors was done with a Martinsound MultiMAX EX system, and continues, ?For reference, we listened to a lot of other DVD surround music mixes ? Concert for George, Peter Gabriel, Metallica; we listened to a lot of different kinds of great music in surround, and the Blue Sky monitors were incredible in that they could handle so many types of music so well. The midrange and high end are smooth, not at all brittle-sounding. And their sub is great. We had kept our own sub on hand just in case, but we never had to plug it in. Tom did the entire record in one week, all on the Blue Sky monitors.
