Tom Leykis Radio Fans Bid Thousands For Chance To See First Show In Three Years

  (March 26, 2012)

BURBANK, CA (PRWEB) March 26, 2012

Outrageous longtime Los Angeles radio personality Tom Leykis, who has taken leave of the radio business to produce a daily live call-in show for the internet (, garnered 33 bids in the first six hours of a five-day eBay auction for two fans to see him do his first call-in show in over three years, with a high bid as of Sunday afternoon of $3,050.00.

Leykis (Twitter: @tomleykis) is auctioning off live in-person access to the show, which will occur at his New Normal Studios in Burbank, CA on April 2nd at 6 PM Eastern/3 PM Pacific. (The auction can be followed here now through this Friday.)

I believe that the success of this auction, and the shock of some of my radio colleagues at the interest level it has generated, is further proof that todays radio industry has forgotten what people loved about radio and how to promote it, says Leykis. Good radio personalities have passionate followings that dont show up directly on balance sheets, but they are the reason why station values went from millions of dollars to hundreds of millions.

The irony of this, says Leykis, is that, rather than promoting the strengths and benefits of stations that have larger-than-life personalities, many of Americas radio stations have endured years of budget-cutting and consolidation in which promotion of stations is seen as an unnecessary expense. Many stations have pretty much stopped promoting their brands, cutting billboards, TV spots and bumper stickers completely out of the budget, says Leykis. The attitude of many station owners seems to be, we dont believe that advertising worksunless were selling it to someone else.

Thats why so many broadcasting companies are looking for TV anchors, reality show contestants, and other radio amateurs to do radio shows. Its because they dont think their own personalities are big enough stars, he says. Theyd be bigger stars, though, if radio did more to promote them.

What about the recent incidents involving Rush Limbaugh and other radio personalities? The reason that radio personalities feel they have to call people crack hos and sluts and prostitutes is because their stations dont want to spend anything on promotion, says Leykis. And this is one sure way to get free media coverage and keep costs low. He cautions, however, that the result of that way of doing business is the boycotts and community pressure that many talk radio stations are feeling now from these incidents. Sounds like a good business plan until you find yourself with Al Sharpton or Gloria Allred on the phone calling with a list of your big corporate sponsors, says Leykis. Maybe some billboards or TV spots to get the station some attention would have been a better call.

Tom Leykis sees himself as going in a totally different direction. He still believes, he says, in the magic of audio contentthe showmanship that keeps people listening. When its done right, audio content is magic. Leykis refuses to refer to what he does as radio because, he says, radio is not audio content any more than The Rolling Stones are a phonograph. Radio is an applianceone of the oldest of many delivery systems for audio content.

Sounds like a pretty negative assessment of the radio business. Any chance radio will figure it out and save itself? I hope so, says Leykis. I have loved radio since I was a kid. I hate to see it slide inexorably into a world of balance sheets and clunky retro technology with very few radio stars.

On one hand, says Tom Leykis, I want radio to get better because its my oldest friend and I think its very, very sick.

On the other hand, if they dont, that will leave plenty of opportunity for those of us who still believe in magic.
