NEW ORLEANS (AP) ' The Times-Picayune is laying off 200 employees as one of the nation's oldest daily newspapers prepares to print just three days a week.
The layoffs amount to about half of the newsroom's 169 employees. Advertising, circulation and other departments also were affected at the 175-year-old newspaper.
About 400 employees at three major Alabama daily newspapers are also losing their jobs as parent company Advance Publications shifts its focus to more online news.
The employees at The Birmingham News, the Press-Register in Mobile and The Huntsville Times were being told of the layoffs Tuesday. Those papers will also switching to three days a week.
The employees being laid off can apply for jobs at the new companies being formed by Advance Publications.
