Tiffen Dfx software

Tiffen Dfx gives the photographer and videographer a whole bag of useful filters for the digital darkroom By Robert Jensen

Gone are the days when the photographer had to lug around dozens of expensive filters in their bag. You had to buy some filters in various sizes to fit different lenses and then waste time juggling them on and off the lenses, often missing a shot. Now Tiffen offers a simpler and more refined approach with its Dfx digital filter software.

Imagine having the money to afford up to 1,000 different filters and have them all at the tip of your fingers ready to apply in an instant. Well, you can purchase Tiffen Dfx in either Select or Complete Editions, as a Stand-alone program or a Photoshop Plug-in. There are even video centric editions for use with Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe After Effects or Avid Editing Systems. Various bundles are available at Tiffen's website as downloads or boxed editions.

The Dfx software doesn't require you to go out and buy a new, more powerful, computer. It will run on an old 1GHz Pentium III or AMD processor with 1GB RAM (2GB is recommended), Windows XP Pro, XP Home, or Vista and an Open-GL capable graphics card running at 1024x758 (1280x1024 recommended).  Mac users need OS X 10.4 and higher, at least a 1GHz G4, G5 or Intel processor. The RAM, display and mouse requirements are the same as with a PC.

Minimum software requirements for still image Plug-In Editions:
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and above
Adobe Photoshop CS3 and above on Intel Macs
Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 and above
Adobe Photoshop Compatible Applications that support the Photoshop 6 API

Dfx is comprised of the following filters: Auto Adjust, Black and White, Black/White Looks, Black Diffusion/FX, Black Pro-Mist, Bleach Bypass, Blur, Bronze Glimmerglass, Center Spot, Chromatic Aberration, Color Compensating, Color Conversion, Color Correct, Color-Grad, Color Infrared, Color Looks, Color Spot, Cool Pro-Mist, Cross Processing, Day for Night, Defog, Defringe, Depth of Field, Diffusion, Double Fog, Dual Grad, Edge Glow, Enhancing, Faux Film, Flashing, Fluorescent, Fog, F-Stop, GamColor Gels, Gels, Glimmerglass, Glow, Gold Diffusion/FX, Gold Reflector, Grain, Halo, HDTV/FX, Infrared, Kelvin, Lens Distortion, Light, Light Balancing, Low Contrast, Mono Tint, ND-Grad, Night Vision, Nude/FX, Old Photo, Overexpose, Ozone, Paint, Pencil, Photographic Filters, Polarizer, Printer Points, Pro-Mist, Rack Focus, Radial Exposure, ReLight, Rosco Gels, Selective Color Correct, Selective Saturation, Sharpen, Silver Reflector, Smoque, Soft/FX, Split Field, Split Tone, Star, Streaks, Strip Grad, Sunset/Twilight, Telecine, Temperature, Three Strip, Ultra Contrast, Vari-Star, Vignette, Warm Black Pro-Mist, Warm Pro-Mist, Warm Soft/FX and Xray.

In Use
Now that we've gotten the details sorted out let`s talk about using the software. I'm reviewing the Dfx Photoshop Complete plug-in running on a 2.2 GHz Pentium Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM within Windows XP SP2 and Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Once you have your selected image opened in Photoshop I would recommend making a duplicate layer from the original image, it uses up more memory but helps with making further adjustments to the final image. Then click on Filters and you'll find at the bottom of the column the Tiffen. Place your mouse cursor on that and it opens a sub listing showing Dfx 1.0, click on that. Dfx will open, filling your screen and presenting you with a clean, well laid out interface. You can turn the various windows off and on but I recommend sticking with the default layout.
