?Thunderbirds Blast Off From HD LaunchpadLip Sync Post creates first HD deliverables for UK theatrical premier (July 22, 2004)
London-based facility Lip Sync Post has created the first High Definition (HD) deliverables to be used for a major live action UK theatrical premier for Universal Pictures International (UPI), Working Title and Studio Canal's ?Thunderbirds (dir. Jonathan Frakes).
The updated version of Jerry Andersen's cult 60's animation, which was shot on 35mm, premiered in London on Sunday July 17, and in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 24th. It is only the second time that Universal has strayed from the traditional 35mm projection route for a premier, and the first such experience for UK audiences.
Created by London-based facility Lip Sync Post for UPI, Working Title and Studio Canal as part of a raft of HD deliverables, the quality of the HD master was so impressive that it was deemed suitable for use at the high-profile premiers.
Lip Sync's Post Production Manager Ritchie Beacham-Paterson explains. "We were able to take CFC Framestore's theatrical grade of 'Thunderbirds' in data form and use our Truelight calibration systems with Quantel's iQ to convert their proprietary colour space into HD, whilst retaining the original grade. When projected in HD, this provides spectacular and hitherto unachievable levels of clarity and detail, demonstrating the great opportunities for HD within the theatrical domain."
David Hodgkinson, Technical Director of UPI, was extremely impressed. "It was a painless process," he maintained. "This was our first UK HD premier and it provided audiences with stunning imagery and sound."
Lip Sync Post has invested more than £2 million in its Soho-based digital film department over the last two years, which has seen it handle the HD output of a number of high profile titles, including UPI/ Working Title's ?Shaun of The Dead (dir. Edgar Wright) and ?Mickybo and Me (dir. Terry Loane).
Lip Sync is currently creating the full Digital Intermediates, including grading and opticals, for British horror/thriller ?Creep, and period piece ?Piccadilly Jim, as well as selected scenes on the Nicole Kidman vehicle 'Birth.'
The facilitys bureau scanning and recording department is working on a large slate of productions including Terry Gilliam's forthcoming 'Brothers Grimm' and children's fantasy film 'Five Children and It' starring Kenneth Branagh and Eddie Izzard.
