Thought Equity Uses Snell & Wilcox Archangel Ph.C

Renews valuable footage for licensing (March 02, 2005)

A digital video restoration system from Snell & Wilcox is helping Denver-based Thought Equity repurpose thousands of hours of preproduced film and video footage for use in feature films, national advertising spots, and television shows. A leading supplier of stock footage and production-ready commercials to the cable, broadcast, cinema, and creative production industries, Thought Equity is using the Archangel Ph.C to stabilize and clean up flaws such as scratches, dirt, and flickers on valuable archival footage for preservation and licensing.

Thought Equity acquires professionally produced footage from more than 500 suppliers, clears all rights and royalty issues, and adds it to the company's extensive online licensing database. By leveraging the real-time restoration technology from the Archangel Ph.C, Thought Equity is able to provide significant value to licensing customers who want the highest quality digitally mastered footage with real-time delivery.

"Archangel gives us the ability to monetize shots -- some of which would cost $50,000 to $75,000 to shoot -- that previously had too much jitter to be useful," explained Thought Equity CEO Kevin Schaff. "By running such footage through Archangel, we can stabilize it and make it available for use in film and television production. Because Archangel is a powerful real-time processor that addresses scratch, flicker, and other clean-up processes with motion compensation upon ingest, we can add tremendous value to footage within a very short timeframe and pass the value on to our customers."

A real-time restoration system with the ability to correct artifacts using motion compensation, Archangel Ph.C cleans up, fixes, and stabilizes any 525- or 625-originated video material that has deteriorated or been damaged, either by age or other factors. The system offers signal processing features that compensate for problems including unsteadiness, luminance flicker, dirt, tramline scratches, noise and grain, video dropout, and two-inch scratches, as well as a linear filter, multiband spatial filter, and a nonlinear enhancer. Typical material can be restored within two or three times its running length.

Prior to the introduction of Archangel Ph.C, high-quality restoration of this type could only be achieved through tedious, time-consuming, and expensive processes. Consequently, it was difficult to justify the restoration of much potentially useful material because of the associated cost. Now virtually anything can be treated -- not just high-value footage -- at a cost far lower than is required for frame-by-frame restoration.

"The speed and quality of our restoration significantly differentiates us from would-be competitors," added Schaff. "Other companies can't compete with the rate at which we can ingest and restore, or with the end product we offer. Archangel has dramatically increased our ability to process and license phenomenal footage."
