Celebrating the official opening of the ?Year of France in China and show-casing its high-definition (HD) technology leadership, Thomson, the world leader in integrated solutions (technologies, equipment and services) for the media and entertainment industries, will support the HD broadcast of a Jean-Michel Jarre musical event in the Forbidden City of Beijing on 10th October.
Thomson, with an HD product and service portfolio stretching from camera to consumer, is an official sponsor of the electronic music and light show, one of the most prominent HD events to take place in Asia.
Thomson is supplying a wide range of Grass Valley broadcast equipment, including a total of sixteen LDK 6000 mk II WorldCam HD cameras, an XtenDD HD vision mixer and a Trinix digital routing switcher, to European outside broadcast production leader, Alfacam, which is producing the concert under management of the Chinese television broadcaster, CCTV. The show will be broadcast via Euro1080 to cinemas and homes in over 15 countries worldwide. An audience of around 14,000 is expected inside the Forbidden City, with thousands more gathering in Tiananmen Square and in three other locations in Beijing where large out-door projection screens will allow free viewing.
Thomson has a growing business in the broadcast and professional product business in China, which is preparing for HDTV digital roll-out in 2005. Worldwide, the momentum for HD production is building up and continues to gain in popularity as viewers increase, content is developed and affordable HDTV sets become available. This year, Thomsons Grass Valley-brand equipment played an important role in every major live HD production, including those of the Academy Awards, the Euro 2004 championships and the 2004 Summer Olympics. High Definition coverage is planned for both the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and the 2008 Olympics in China, events at which Thomsons broadcast equipment will again play a key role.
?We are particularly pleased to be contributing to a unique HD production which opens the Year of France in China, commented Frank Dangeard, Chairman & CEO of Thomson. ?After more than two decades, the promise of ?high definition has become a reality: it provides outstanding picture quality for viewers and a dramatic new means of expression for content creators and producers. We are convinced that the technological progress already achieved will make High Definition a mass-phenomenon in the very near future.
Thomson is working actively to support the development of HD, and in France notably is a founding member of the HD Forum, which includes approximately 20 broadcasters, industrial groups and editors.
