Thomson Demos PVTV, CameraMan, and WebSTATION

Distance learning, presentation, and broadcast education solutions. (June 02, 2004)

In the first combined public display of its Grass Valley brand broadcast technologies with its recently acquired PVTV, CameraMan and WebSTATION products, Thomson, the world leader in integrated solutions (technologies, equipment and services) for the entertainment and media industries, is showcasing new solutions for distance learning, corporate and government presentations, and broadcast education at the InfoComm 04 conference in Atlanta, Ga.

Thomson will display the new turnkey solutions this week in the booths of its RCA (Booth 2754) and Grass Valley (Booth 533) branded equipment at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Thomson recently acquired the assets of the Video Division of ParkerVision, including the PVTV, CameraMan and WebSTATION products. By combining these products with proven Grass Valley broadcast technologies, Thomson can offer solutions that enable corporate, government, and educational media centers to produce more high-quality content, more efficiently, with existing resources.

“Whether it’s a CEO’s speech or a lecture on astrophysics, Thomson understands the needs of professional audio/video departments that want to produce high-quality events as cost-effectively as possible,” said Marc Valentin, president of Thomson Broadcast & Media Solutions. “These new systems make Thomson well positioned to meet the demands of this market.”

Along with professional broadcast products, Thomson will display a full line of advanced RCA entertainment/informational products targeting the education market.

Three New Integrated Systems on Display
To accelerate its growth in the professional audio/video (PAV) market, Thomson is displaying three new integrated systems that address three key market segments: presentation, distance learning and communications, and broadcast education.

For corporate and government presentations, Thomson will demonstrate a turnkey system with Grass Valley brand products that include the CameraMan 3e Presenter System, which features an integrated pan/tilt robotic camera solution and a presentation-tracker capability; a KayakDD digital production switcher and/or a PVTV Plus PRO live production package; an M-Series intelligent video digital recorder (iVDR); and a WebSTATION live/on-demand video streaming solution.

For distance learning and communications, Thomson will demonstrate a turnkey system that features the CameraMan 3e Presenter System; PVTV Plus PRO and PVTV Plus LEARNING live production systems, which provide efficient, broadcast-quality production in a single-operator environment; an M-Series iVDR, and a WebSTATION solution.

For broadcast education, Thomson will demonstrate a turnkey system that includes the CameraMan 3e Presenter System; the PVTV Plus LEARNING systems and/or the KayakDD switcher, and the M-Series iVDR.

RCA Products Feature Latest HDTV Displays
Products include RCA Profiles 61-inch and 50-inch ultra-thin HDTV models capable of hanging on a wall for the ultimate lecture or distance-learning display; flat panel LCD displays in 26-, 27- and 30-inch screen sizes; a full line of analog direct-view commercial TVs with network capability in screen sizes ranging from 20-inch to 32-inch models; and a select line of accessory items designed to enhance the usability of the entire commercial product line.

The revolutionary RCA Profiles DLP HDTV Sets offer an alternative to plasma displays with lightweight cabinets less than seven inches deep and a seamless picture that produces over 16 million colors and over 1,000 shades of gray with twice the contrast of many competing micro-display technologies. In addition to the ultra-thin Profiles models, Thomson will display conventional 50- and 61-inch RCA DLP HDTV models in lightweight cabinets 16- to 19-inches deep. Like all HDTVs based on Texas Instruments’ DLP technology, these models produce high contrast color images with rich blacks and dark detail, creating the optimum viewing experience. Nearly a million microscopic mirrors deliver razor-sharp images and a seamless picture without convergence or burn-in issues.

About the Products
Built for cost-conscious news, broadcast, and educational program production, Grass Valley PVTV systems let users get more content on air, more easily, with fewer personnel. They eliminate many human errors, improve production consistency, and can handle late-breaking and unexpected events—all without sacrificing the look and feel of a broadcast or presentation.

The Grass Valley WebSTATION system supports live or on-demand Web viewing of a broadcast produced with a PVTV system. When combined with PVTV solutions, WebSTATION provides the most efficient, broadcast-quality Web cast for corporate and government communications and distance learning applications.

The new Grass Valley CameraMan 3e Presenter System comes with the most reliable, industry-proven autoTRACK technology which is installed in thousands of distance learning classrooms across the country. The autoTRACK technology automatically follows an instructor’s movements so they can focus on the lesson plan rather than the technology. The CameraMan 3e is a value priced, 3-CCD camera with an auto-focus lens that supports simultaneous analog and digital outputs. It supports the Grass Valley SHOT Director multi-camera joystick controller and other third-party control systems such as those from Crestron or AMX.

Supporting traditional VTR functions and removable media, the 4 RU Grass Valley M-Series iVDR does the work of multiple VTRs while providing features not possible with a linear tape machine. These features include two-channel simultaneous I/O operation; built-in clip trimming and playlist creation; universal file support; and variable speed playback (slo-mo). The latest additions to the iVDR line also include such features as digital audio and support for 50 Mb/s video compression.

The popular Grass Valley KayakDD switcher line, installed in more than 175 facilities worldwide, is a 1 M/E switcher designed for broadcast and professional applications in live and studio settings. Thomson also offers a high-definition version of the switcher, the Kayak HD system.
