The nation's weather

The nation's weather By The Associated Press

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, March 26, 2012.

The trough of low pressure that brought wet and unsettled weather to California and the Pacific Northwest on Sunday will move inland on Monday. As this system progresses, scattered rain showers and high elevation snow will spread across the Intermountain West and the Northern Rockies with strong and gusty winds. High winds combined with low relative humidity levels and warm temperatures may create fire weather conditions in the High Plains. Once the system reaches the Rockies, scattered thunderstorms may form ahead of this system in the the Northern Plains by the early evening. There is a slight risk for severe thunderstorm development across the region with primary threats of damaging wind gusts and hail.

In the East, showers and thunderstorms will wind taper down in the Mid-Atlantic through the afternoon as offshore low pressure pushes further into the Atlantic Ocean. As this system departs, a cold ridge of high pressure from the north will build in across the Eastern U.S. with cooler weather. Freeze Watches and Warnings and Frost Advisories are in effect for areas of Michigan, while Freeze Watches remain in effect for Indiana through western Pennsylvania and the Baltimore and D.C. in anticipation of freezing/sub-freezing nighttime and early morning temperatures. Cold weather could be dangerous to sensitive vegetation that experienced accelerated growth during the last couple of weeks.

Elsewhere in the East, expect light snow to continue in parts of Maine, while drier conditions return to southern Florida. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of 19 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont. to a high of 90 degrees at Pecos, Texas
