The Sound of Time: New Creative Editing Tool Links Music And Motion

Editing Technology Used to Launch New Nike Ads (December 17, 2001)
Today Sound of Time, Inc. and Michael Neuman, director of Research Studios San Francisco, and artist Michael Joaquin Grey announced the introduction of The Sound of Time, a new editing technology developed as a tool to intrinsically link sound and motion. Brand Jordan, via ad agency Wieden & Kennedy, will be the first company to license this never seen before creative tool for use in the creation and production of commercials for the Jordan Trunner campaign.

The Sound of Time is a new proprietary multimedia system that automatically synchronizes moving image with sound, creating a potentially infinite number of variations in motion, sound, and their nexus. This radical system alters the very concept of editing by automatically and almost effortlessly synchronizing unrelated audio and visual tracks.

The Jordan ads, in the first commercial use of the tool, will implement The Sound of Time creative system to develop a distinctive visual design unlike anything previously seen. Award winning director Brian Beletic will be working with Sound of Time inventors Michael Neuman and Michael Grey in the creative and production of the ads. Research Studios of San Francisco will do the titles and post-production, for the Jordan spots.

"This is a powerful creative tool and editing system that allows you to edit multimedia automatically, unlike any conventional editing or creative development software available today," said creator Michael Neuman. "For anyone who makes multimedia: from film, commercials, music videos all the way to home movies, The Sound of Time quickly and easily synchronizes moving pictures to music."

The Sound of Time allows users to make powerful and compelling professional quality multimedia works in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional editing techniques. The Sound of Time, using its proprietary Itchy technology, arms the user with infinite creative options for altering motion pictures with sound and vice versa, offering artists and filmmakers a vast, limitless space of experimentation.

"Think of The Sound of Time as a way of visualizing music, but not as an abstraction," said co-creator Michael Joaquin Grey. "With The Sound of Time, sound becomes vision. "The Sound of Time is about as close as you can get to a perpetual motion machine."

With The Sound of Time, Neuman and Grey have developed a way of fundamentally connecting audio and visual content for direct communication. Touching on the machine language of how we perceive and connect to music and the moving image, The Sound of Time creates a direct link to the powerful connection that sound and music makes with our emotions.

Michael Neuman concludes, "The Sound of Time is not a computer effect, sound actually drives motion, and the viewer's emotion. Once mastered, The Sound of Time becomes a powerful instrument that's very easy to play."
