'The RX Factor' Mixes Fiction, Chillingly Real Corporate Conspiracy Theory

(May 02, 2012)

SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/02/12 -- J. Thomas Shaw's new novel, "The RX Factor," (www.therxfactor.com) is a political thriller that dramatizes what some view as the highly suspect role major pharmaceutical companies play in U.S. health care.

"Big Pharma develops maintenance drugs to alleviate symptoms -- many are addictive drugs," Shaw says. "Despite all its research, Big Pharma has never produced a cure for anything. One can only conclude they're not trying to cure anything.

"'The RX Factor' is based on the premise that Big Pharma wants to keep people dependent on drugs to ensure profits. And the U.S. government is complicit because it can't afford to have the average life expectancy rise -- it doesn't have the resources to care for millions more very elderly Americans. It's a chillingly real possibility."

In the book, cancer researcher Ryan Matthews gave up his search for a cure for the disease after his wife and children died in a plane crash five years earlier. Living in the Bahamas, he happens to meet an attractive fellow scientist, Jordan Carver. She tells him of her plan to open a clinic in Mexico where terminally ill patients can receive experimental treatments. The very night the two meet, the aunt and uncle who raised Jordan die, apparently in an explosion.

"In setting out to uncover the truths about all of those deaths, the couple find themselves on a dangerous adventure involving corporate and political villains at the highest levels," Shaw says.

Reviewers have compared Shaw to lawyer and best-selling novelist John Grisham.

"The issues broached are serious ones that any thinking man or woman should take time to ponder," writes reviewer Gloria Reiser.

"If a good fast-paced action-adventure tale is all that you seek, you will be happily satisfied. However, don't be surprised if you also find yourself pondering issues in the news, discussions ... and events in your everyday life."
