The Pixel Farm Announce PFPlay V 1.0Digital film production review and conform system for OS X and Linux (November 15, 2004)
The Pixel Farm, a company focused on innovation in the field of high-end digital post-production, is pleased to announce the introduction of PFPlay V1.0. An advanced, resolution independent, software based, digital daily and production review system for Mac OS X and Linux. PFPlay provides a cost effective disc based play back and review solution for departmental, facility wide and daily review cinema implementation. By working closely with Apple to offer a highly optimised solution, The Pixel Farm has produced a desktop system for film review at a fraction of the cost of systems on other platforms.
Automatically Conform Offline Edits
PFPlay enables users to conform digital film images stored throughout a facility using the actual film edit timeline, over the network. This dramatically speeds up the review and approval process, removing the need to double hand footage, and allows anyone involved in the post production environment to review work in context. PFPlay uses the open XML file standard to import the EDL from Apples Final Cut Pro and will offer further support for other standard EDL formats such as CMX3600 and AAF via a plug-in architecture, thus all major editing systems can be supported. This allows fast and full integration into existing production pipelines.
PFPlay locates the high-resolution clips and then builds up the timeline as a background process, prior to playback. Further timeline updates can then be scheduled - or manually instigated thus ensuring that the latest version of the project edit is always available for review. Simple yet effective edit tools are also provided to modify or build timelines from scratch. Batch processing and advanced media management tools, including clip history, media linking and full cross platform support for file systems, allows even complex projects or those distributed to a large number of viewers, to be quickly and efficiently managed.
3D LUTS and Film Look Manager
PFPlay makes extensive use of 3D Look Up Tables (3D LUTs) to pre-visualise the film in the final output medium. 3D LUTs provide much greater control of the film colour space, thus overcoming the common problems of colour difference often encountered in film pre visualisation when using the more customary 1D and viewing the final output in the required medium. Handled through a comprehensive and flexible 3D LUT manager, PFPlay uses an open API for the implementation of standard 3D party solutions such as Kodak, Arri and Rising Sun, as well as custom built in house systems. 3D LUTs are implemented in PFPlay to work in real-time thus In this instance, when altering values, 3D LUTs provides instant feedback without the need to re-render any footage.
Fast Return on Investment
PFPlay offers significant time and cost saving benefits for anyone working with Digital Intermediates, special effects and HD video - from the creation of dailies, through to first edits, pre visualising of special effects to visualisation of an entire film. In addition, PFPlay can drive projectors in the review theatre for directorial approval, team review and shot analysis. This removes the need for the long-winded and costly practice of printing to film and developing positives simply to check edits, colour and special effects a process that can consume weeks of valuable development time on a film project.
Fully optimised for Mac OSX and built for the G5, PFPlay is the only cost effective solution for viewing 2K digital dailies.
