The Orphanage Wraps 2nd Robert Rodriguez Film This YearCompletes 153 visual effect shots for The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D (June 23, 2005)
The Orphanage, Inc. Visual Effects and Animation division successfully completed 153 visual effect shots for The Adventures Of Shark Boy And Lava Girl In 3-D for filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. Visual Effects Supervisor Ryan Tudhope headed up The Orphanage team with Marc Sadeghi serving as the Executive Producer in charge of the production and Arin Finger serving as Producer for the project.
The Orphanage crew of 100 visual effects artists, editors and production staff completed the 3D work, which included extensive digital environments, creature modeling and effects animation (particles & dynamics simulations). Stereographic films are challenging from a visual effects standpoint. Each element must be created twice, once for each eye, essentially doubling the total shot count. Designing an effective 3D experience for the audience is something that must be painstakingly hand-tweaked on a shot-by-shot basis.
Shark Boy and Lava Girl is the second feature in 2005 as well as the second 3D childrens film collaboration between The Orphanage and Robert Rodriguezs Troublemaker Studios. ?After working together on Sin City it was a change of pace to create the colorful 3D world of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, but The Orphanage was able to translate my wild ideas into some amazing environments and characters" said Robert Rodriguez. This action-adventure film about a 10-year-old outcast whose fantasies become reality, stars a great ensemble cast of up-and-coming young talent and a complement of television and film stars including David Arquette and Kristen Davis as the parents and George Lopez as Mr. Electric. Elizabeth Avellan and Robert Rodriguez are producing Shark Boy with Racer Rodriguez (their son) credited with story and screenplay. Dimension recently released the film on June 10, 2005 to very positive reviews and box office numbers.
Orphanage Executive Producer Marc Sadeghi remarked ?Shark Boy marks our third collaboration with Rodriguez, which began with approximately 80 shots for the 2003 summer blockbuster Spy Kids 3-D and continued with 635 shots for the ?That Yellow Bastard chapter of the current critical and box office hit Sin City. We really look forward to starting our next project with Robert and Elizabeth. The film also marks the first Orphanage project in which long-time Orphan, Ryan Tudhope, served as VFX Supervisor. Stu Maschwitz a founder of The Orphanage and Senior VFX Supervisor on this project remarked, ?"Ryan is one of the first two people we ever hired at The Orphanage, and he has grown apace with the company. After our great experience working together on Sin City, I had no worries about handing him the reigns for Shark Boy & Lava Girl."
