The Mill Uses Genarts For New Kylie Minogue Music Video

Sapphire-Plug-ins used to create light effects for 'I Believe in You' (December 15, 2004)

Based in Soho, London, The Mill is one of the world's leading post-production facilities, specializing in high-end visual effects for commercials, music promos and television. One of The Mill's recent projects was to literally cage Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue for her newly released video 'I Believe in You.'

This latest video features the pop queen singing and dancing inside a neon spherical cage with each verse being marked by the appearance of a new light cage, rotating around the singer in rhythm to her music. The Mill's Flame artist, Adam Grint, was charged with enhancing the light bars on the cages to bring out their full potential. Using Sapphire Plug-ins from GenArts, he boosted and leveled the glow of each bar for each new cage.

"I made extensive use of the Sapphire Glow and Glint effects to enhance the light of each bar on the cages and create this sexy, neon, fluorescent look," explains Adam. We also used the Glow effect to give some added radiance to the skin tones. Whereas the Glow effect was very much used to enhance the look of a shot, the Glint was more of a design tool. On the cage for instance, I used the Glint effect vertically to give it a bit more sheen, which helped fill the frame a bit more and give it more structure."

"One of the most challenging elements of this project was making the background dancers look more abstract, to make it seem as if Kylie was enveloped in their light," says Adam. "I had to make the lights around their bodies look streaked, like they were shot on a slow shutter, so I used the Glow effect to bolt the light space around them," he adds.

"I always use Sapphire Glow above others glows available on the market; I just find that it gives a nicer, more natural look. Some of the other glows available out there are just way too clinical for my liking. Even on the simple default setting of Sapphire Glow, you get a wonderful natural look, and it has tons of good controls to help you refine and tweak the colors just the way you like!"
