The Making of the Trailer for "The Mummy Returns" Game

Absinthe Pictures Specializes in Game Trailers, Tells DGD About the Process By Lisa Riznikove
Q: What are the special challenges of doing trailers for video games?

A: One of the main challenges is simply getting good quality footage. When promoting a movie or television show you work existing footage from the movie, but when you promote a videogame you have to "create" your own movie by playing the game. When we first started working with game footage we simply weren't happy with the quality of what we were seeing out there. So we developed special technics and propriatary technology to make the game footage look as good as possible.

The other challenge is making a compelling and cohesive story out of gameplay. What will ultimately take a gamer days or even weeks to experience must be distilled into a 3 to 5 minute trailer that will make someone want to go out and buy it. Just like the development of a game, we start with a good script, then we "direct" shots to be both cinematic and accurately portray the action of the game. The most challenging part is that when we work on these trailers the games are in a very early stage of development, so we have to find a way to work with existing game assets and make it look like its finished.
