The Foundry Shows Furnace for Shake

Plugins targeted toward film compositors By Dave Nagel
The Foundry has started showing off Furnace, a new set of plugins for Apple's Shake compositing system. The Foundry produces plugins (such as Tinderbox) for Adobe After Effects, Avid|DS, high-end Discreet systems and other platforms. Furnace was previously announced back in August, and it was shown for the first time at the IBC convention in Amsterdam. The new package is targeted specifically toward film compositors.

Furnace, unlike other Foundry plugin sets, is not an effects package, but provides additional compositing and rotoscoping tools to Shake. According to The Foundry, a prerelease version is being used by The Moving Picture Company on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Jackie Chan's Highbinders for wire removal.

Furnace's plugins include:

  • Wire Removal;
  • Rig Removal;
  • Retimer (for building inbetween frames and reducing edge dragging);
  • Steadiness (for removing translational and rotational camera shake);
  • Deflicker;
  • Degrain;
  • Regrain;
  • Texture Replication (for generating seamless plates of imagery from a sample picture).

Furnace will support Shake on Mac OS X, as well as other platforms. Pricing has not yet been set. For more information, visit
