The Courtauld Institute of Art Uses Extensis Digital Asset Management Solutions for Efficient Collections Management of Its Image Library(July 17, 2012)
Northampton, UK (PRWEB UK) 17 July 2012
Extensis today announces that The Courtauld Institute of Art, one of the worlds leading centres for the study of art history and conservation, has selected Extensis Portfolio Server to manage its image library of more than 550 paintings, 9,500 prints and 35,000 photographs.
The Courtauld Institute of Art is famous for its unrivalled collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, which includes Van Goghs "Self-portrait with Bandaged Ear" and "A Bar at the Folies-Bergère" by Edouard Manet. Highlights from the Renaissance collection include several works by Botticelli together with Lucas Cranach the Elders Adam and Eve.
The Institute initially invested in an out-sourced DAM solution, which proved quite expensive and inflexible to meet its changing needs.
The Courtauld turned to Portfolio Server because it offers:
1 a cost-effective platform to implement and maintain;
2 an open API to integrate seamlessly with Zetcoms MuseumPlus Collection Management System;
3 a way for the Institute to bring its entire image collection online.
Tom Bilson, Head of Digital Media, comments, Digital asset management is a critical element for our gallery: our company and the preservation of the images in our archive revolves around it entirely. The API delivers a crucial connection between our collection management portal and our vast collection of high-quality images. By leveraging the tools within Portfolio Server across the Institute and from within our collections management system, we will be able to make the images available to all of our students a priority that we have now been able to make a reality.
Collections Management Systems are great at managing object information from a curatorial perspective, but only go so far when it comes to considering content as Digital Assets, said Richard Bamford, EMEA Business Director at Extensis. The Courtauld Institute of Art is a fantastic example of how DAM works with CMS to provide a comprehensive collection information solution and we are very proud to have such a respected organisation as our customer.
The Courtauld Institute of Art is part of Extensis prestigious list of global heritage and cultural customers who use Portfolio Server, which includes Kiasma, The Museum of Contemporary Art, (Helsinki, Finland), The Royal Botanical Gardens, (Kew, UK), The National Trust for Scotland (Edinburgh, UK), The National Museums of Ireland, (Dublin, Ireland), The Royal Albert Hall (London, UK), The British Library, (London, UK), English Heritage (Swindon, UK), and Teylers Museum, (The Netherlands).
