Texas university bus crashes; 1 killed, 13 hurtAt least 1 dead, others injured when bus carrying Abilene Christian students crashes in Texas
BALLINGER, Texas (AP) ' A bus carrying Abilene Christian University students and faculty drifted out of control and overturned on a Texas highway on Friday, killing at least one person and injuring at least a dozen others, officials said.
Abilene Christian said in a statement on its emergency website that 12 agricultural students, three faculty members and a faculty member's spouse were passengers on the bus, which crashed near Ballinger, a town about 200 miles southwest of Fort Worth.
One person was confirmed dead at the scene and at least 13 others were taken to area hospitals, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
"We're trying to determine exactly what we have," Abilene Christian Police Chief Jimmy Ellison told KDFW-TV in Dallas. "There were several critical injuries."
The bus was traveling south on U.S. 83 about 3:30 p.m. when the driver lost control as he approached a slight curve, according to the public safety department. The bus struck a concrete culvert and flipped, turning over completely one time and ejecting several passengers.
Dr. Phil Schubert, president of the 4,700-student school in central Texas, was headed Friday evening with staff to the hospitals where passengers were transported, the school said.
