Texas may block stem cell therapy used on PerryTexas Medical Board mulls restricting, blocking stem cell therapy used on GOP Gov. Rick Perry
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ' The adult stem cell procedure that Texas Gov. Rick Perry underwent this summer could be blocked under new rules being considered by the state's Medical Board.
The Republican presidential candidate had the treatment in July. Cells taken from his fat were grown in a lab, then injected into his back and bloodstream during an operation to fuse part of his spine.
Some top scientists are questioning the safety and wisdom of the procedure, which is beyond mainstream medicine. It carries potential risks ranging from blood clots to cancer.
Texas Medical Board members are scheduled Friday to discuss whether an independent committee needs to review the procedure before it's administered to more patients.
Perry opposes greater oversight. He's urged the board to recognize "the revolutionary potential" of adult stem cell research.
