Telestream Announces FlipFactory HD and V4.0 AvailabilityFlipFactory HD release coincides with a major Version 4.0 release for the entire FlipFactory family (September 09, 2005)
Telestream, the leading provider of workflow automation solutions for the broadcast industry, today announced September 28 availability for FlipFactory HD, the company's newest product to emerge from its world-renowned FlipFactory family. The new product release coincides with a major Version 4.0 software release for the entire FlipFactory family. Highlights of the FlipFactory V4.0 release include support for the major MXF camera and server systems and formats, first-time desktop access to the FlipFactory user interface for Mac users, enhanced video quality for VOD applications, transcode speed enhancements, and much more.
?With the increasing adoption of high definition, FlipFactory HD solves the challenge of converting multiformat source media into HD formats, said David Heppe, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Telestream. ?This is essential for broadcasters who regularly receive commercials in mixed SD and HD formats and need to convert them to HD on-air signals. It is equally useful for content owners and creators, providing an efficient process for automated batch upconversion of standard definition archives.
With the introduction of FlipFactory HD, Telestream initially supports Grass Valley, Omneon, and Pinnacle HD media server output formats, as well as MPEG VOD HD and Windows Media HD. Multiformat source media are converted to 720p, 1080i, and 1080p MPEG high definition formats. FlipFactory HD eliminates the need for a hardware upconverter, baseband signal routing, and operator intervention. SD-to-HD and HD-to-HD conversions are completely automated, including transcoding, batch processing and file-based media and metadata exchange. In addition, Telestream's exclusive, patent-pending Motion Resolve technology utilizes a unique two step process for upconverting and processing compressed standard definition content to provide superior HD output picture quality.
The major Version 4.0 software release adds significant new features and enhancements for the entire line of FlipFactory workflow automation products. Media and metadata file transfer support for the major MXF camera and server systems include Panasonic P2, EVS MJPEG, and Omneon, in addition to Sony XDCAM. Telestream provides a vastly more efficient means for the transfer of Panasonic P2 media files to Avid Unity.
?Telestream's FlipFactory transcoder provides a quick and powerful gateway to the IT-centric world for Panasonic P2 content, said John Baisley, President of Panasonic Broadcast & Television Systems. ?From a workflow perspective, FlipFactory provides significant value by automating the ingest of MXF DV content from the Panasonic P2 card and, where necessary, reformatting the content for direct file transfer to newsroom and other destination systems in the formats required by each.
For broadcasters, an important new V4.0 feature is the addition of VBI synthesis from alpha numeric formats. This feature allows broadcasters to conveniently add closed captions while creating video files, and thus automate what was previously a time-consuming manual process.
Telestream has expanded support for the Apple universe. In the V4.0 release, the FlipFactory user interface adds support for the Mac OS X operating system and Safari Web browser, providing convenient desktop access to FlipFactory functionality for Mac users. Telestream has also added support for the Apple Xsan Environment, providing file-based compatibility and exchange with other systems.
A number of important new system and performance features in V4.0 add value for all FlipFactory users. Video processing speeds have significantly improved due to new Telestream algorithms and the integration of MMX, SSE and SSE2 technologies. New MPEG motion estimation enhances MPEG-2 video encoding quality. Plus, the new 3:2 pulldown temporal interpolation filter eliminates blurred motion during frame rate changes.
The V4.0 release adds much deeper support for the Omneon Video Networks media server. In addition to Omneon HD and MXF encode and decode support, FlipFactory now rewraps all the DV and DVCPro formats (both NTSC and PAL), making file transfers faster. Telestream has also added support for multichannel WAV audio, expanded handling of closed captions and timecode, and added server monitoring support to further refine the automation process.
New audio features include AES3 (SMPTE 302) audio in the MPEG-2 transport stream. This is an important addition for VOD applications, as it provides encoding and decoding of up to 8 channels of AES3 audio. Plus, FlipFactory adds support for up to four MPEG compressed audio channels, an important new feature for all applications.
New SSC file support for Pinnacle Mediastream provides timecode and closed caption data from a .SCC file, saving time and steps for television content creators. Improved closed caption handling includes the ability to read and write closed captions in DV25 and GXF, providing support for the Grass Valley M Series server. Plus, a new DVD encoder allows users to quickly and easily select aspect ratio settings, rather than having to specify settings. New MPEG-2 support for Matrox DigiSuite has also been added.
Telestream has expanded support for digital delivery services in their FlipFactory TrafficManager. A new Pathfire monitor provides automated monitoring, tracking and redistribution of commercials received from the Pathfire spot server expanding current support for Pathfire-delivered news and syndication content. Plus, support has been added for MIJO, a major digital commercial delivery service provider in Canada, and SmartJog, an international content delivery service provider.
For news applications, FlipFactory NewsManager has added a Reuters monitor to provide automated monitoring, transcoding, and redistribution of news content from Reuters' new World News Express (WNE) file-based delivery system.
FlipFactory HD and Version 4.0 updates will be available September 28 through Telestream's worldwide sales distribution network. They are also being demonstrated in Stand 7.831 at this week's International Broadcasters Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam.
