Teachers in Oregon school district on strikeTeachers in southwest Oregon school district go on strike as negotiations continue
EAGLE POINT, Ore. (AP) ' Employees of a southwest Oregon school district are on strike and classes have been canceled as contract negotiations continue.
The strike at Eagle Point began at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The district near Medford has 328 employees, including 186 teachers.
Dave Carrell, acting president of the Eagle Point Education Association, says negotiators have been working all night and are still talking past the deadline. He says, "Something still could happen, and we certainly hope it does."
Jackson County School District 9 canceled classes Monday and Tuesday in anticipation of the strike.
The school board has said it plans to continue classes Wednesday and keep graduation plans on track for seniors. The board gave Superintendent Cynda Rickert permission to hire substitutes and to offer incentive pay to employees who choose not to strike.
