Taldren Selects Giant Studios for Motion Capture

Includes license for Giant's motion editing/modification software Nuance By DMN Staff Writer
Giant Studios was selected by game developer Taldren to provide motion capture technology, and services for Taldren's undisclosed interactive game project. Taldren also elected to use Giant's proprietary motion editing and enhancement software, Nuance, to help streamline the motion capture data into their production pipeline.

"Giant's real-time monitoring gave us immediate feedback as the talent performed the moves driving our own character model," said Erik Bethke, president of Taldren. "This capability totally blew us away, as we did not see any other studio with this ability. Seeing your motions in real-time vastly improves both the quality of the moves at the end and saves a great deal of time and money for everyone."

"As an added bonus Giant provided us with a license for their proprietary motion editing/modification software Nuance," said lead animator David T. Potter. "Nuance gives us the freedom to modify and edit the data in any way we want -- on our own timeline and dollar. It's really streamlining our production pipeline."

"Nuance is the most powerful motion capture editing/modification tool I've seen," said Chip Mosher, West Coast Sales Director for Giant. "As part of our commitment in making the end user experience of mocap as seamless as possible, we are now offering limited licenses to select clients. Giving the client more flexibility and control than ever."

Giant Studios captured the motion with a 16-camera setup in their 5,000-square-foot studio based at the Santa Monica airport. The company's proprietary motion capture system generates high quality motion for human or non-human skeletons and its algorithm streaming technology allows any character to be directed in real-time. Giant's motion modification tool Nuance enables Taldren's animators to edit and modify the capture data at the skeleton source without losing the natural nuances of the captured motion.

Taldren was founded in 1999 by members of the internal development team at Interplay who created the award-winning title "Starfleet Command." The game was published in four languages and worldwide sales have so far exceeded 400,000 copies. "Starfleet Command Volume II: Empires at War" was released in December of 2000 and has been warmly received by gamers and critics alike.
