Tadpole Wins Epic Mobile GIS Software Contract From Multi-Utility Consumers Energy Of Michigan

Tadpole's Business and Technology Relationship With ESRI, The World's Leading Vendor of Geographic Information System (GIS) Software, Leads to Tadpole Being Awarded a Large Single Enterprise Deployment Contract (January 16, 2002)
Tadpole, the mobile computing and network infrastructure developer and vendor, today announces that its GIS field mapping software subsidiary, Tadpole-Cartesia, has won a large field deployment indicative of a growing trend in the user community to extend the reach of GIS into the field.

The contract, from Michigan-based utility Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corp.(annual revenues $15 billion, assets $16 billion), paves the way for the energy provider to put quality task and spatial data into the hands of over 1,800 field engineers, make further gains in field worker productivity, and increase customer service levels.

Tadpole's business and technology relationship with ESRI combines the best practices and expertise of both companies. ESRI technology is the world's most widely-used GIS platform, and Tadpole has an enviable pedigree in developing value-add modules that allow full use of decision-making GIS technology in the field.

Satisfying the myriad roles of Consumers Energy's field engineers called for Tadpole to supply its field extension modules running on ESRI's ArcPad data capture software. Tadpole's solutions integrate seamlessly with the utility's investments in existing business systems, hardware and processes such as dispatch and work order management. Prominent features of the value-add modules include a synchronization tool that automatically records new events in corporate GIS data and transmits that information to field computing devices, and functionality that permits all data formats to be read and viewed in their native forms.

"Critical factors in selecting Tadpole's mobile GIS solution was its ability to handle our existing data formats efficiently, and that it protects Consumers Energy's current and forward investments in ESRI technology," stated Max A. Rogers, field graphics project manager at Consumers Energy.

Roxanne Cox-Drake, ESRI's electric and gas utilities industry manager, comments: "The applied use of ESRI technology within and across the corporate environment is a well-proven highway for improved business efficiency. By bringing Tadpole's expertise and solutions to its field operations, Consumers Energy unlocks its true potential and takes a quantum leap in better serving its customers."

Jason Linsey, Tadpole-Cartesia's director of North American operations: "Today's business environment demands that companies deploy the optimal IT infrastructure across all their operations. Tadpole's ESRI-based field technology is the fast-track to competitive edge and business efficiency, and this contract will allow Consumers Energy to maximize service to its 6 million plus natural gas and electric customers."

Consumers Energy is Michigan's largest electric and natural gas utility. It is the nation's fifth-largest natural gas utility and the country's 10th largest electric utility. Consumers Energy provides electric and natural gas service to more than six million of the state's nine and one-half million residents in all 68 counties of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Consumers Energy is the principal subsidiary of Dearborn-based CMS Energy Corp., an $11 billion (sales), $16 billion (asset) international corporation.

For more than 30 years, ESRI has been the leading developer of GIS software with more than 300,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services.
