TOBIS, Portugal, Gets BrightDrive Media Sharing Systems for Major Film Restoration Project

(December 12, 2007)
DMN Newswire--2007-12-12--Bright Systems, Inc., developer of disk recording and data infrastructure technology, is today announcing that TOBIS PORTUGUESA S.A., Lisbon, one of Portugal’s oldest film production companies, has purchased a BrightDrive shareable media store as the infrastructure for a new data-centric post-production workflow. The system will be used by TOBIS Digital to enable multiple operators working on a massive film restoration project to access and share the same media simultaneously across a range of digital post applications.

The project involves the restoration of approximately 50 Portuguese feature films dating from the late 1930s to 2005. TOBIS will use BrightDrive to access, manage and distribute media during the restoration process. The films will be restored and packaged for distribution for DCI 2K Projection, HD DVD/BluRay home video, pay-TV and download. Pictures and audio will be restored, color-corrected and remastered. The timescale for each film is extremely tight which is one of the reasons TOBIS opted for a media sharing infrastructure for the restoration processes as it will enable multiple operations to be undertaken simultaneously.

Tiago Silva, head of technical services, TOBIS PORTUGUESA, explains: “For this project we had to get a digital infrastructure with file-based locking and concurrent access for several clients. It had to be one made specifically for the digital film market, so that we can get 24 digital film frames (around 13MB each) every second for several simultaneous operations. Without this, we risk dropping a frame somewhere. The choice of supplier became a very important decision because being the single point of failure of several operations, the digital infrastructure becomes mission-critical. The BrightDrive system will sit at the heart of our DI and restoration processes.”

He continues, “Bright Systems has an unrivalled knowledge of media sharing technology, and BrightDrive combines power, flexibility, and reliability. This has given us a solution that will deliver optimum performance, enabling us to achieve a high level of efficiency for our workflow at a realistic price.”

Supplied by Storaxx, Bright’s reseller for Portugal, a BrightDrive Pro4 will be configured with multiple online workspaces to provide 4 concurrent 2K real-time data streams. Data will be ingested into the BrightDrive infrastructure from a Cintel DSX scanner where it will be available immediately online to a Filmlight Baselight color corrector and an Avid DS Nitris. Operators using a PFClean system will also have access to the data for restoration purposes from BrightDrive’s additional nearline workspace. TOBIS has also purchased a GigE Expander from Bright which will enable them to maximise the performance of its existing Ethernet network.

The BrightDrive family of resolution-independent shared media systems uses pioneering advances in infrastructure technology to set new standards in collaborative digital media sharing, content delivery and workflow efficiencies by allowing concurrent users simultaneous access to files across multiple platforms and in any format to 4k and beyond. TOBIS will also benefit from Bright Systems’ BrightDrive Data Management Suite which is designed to maintain optimized system performance and reliability.

One of Portugal’s oldest postproduction companies, TOBIS PORTUGUESA is this year celebrating its 75th anniversary. TOBIS Digital is the result of TOBIS Portuguesa’s acquisition of a share capital of Concept Films. Having made significant investments in equipment, TOBIS Digital provides a full range of high quality, creative and tailor-made post-production services for local and international clients.
