MK12 designed three packages to help promote Viva's video countdown specials
Viva, which was recently acquired by media conglomerate Viacom in its biggest acquisition outside the U.S., wanted to re-introduce the channel, which already had a 10-year history on the air as Germanys dominant source for youth culture and music. Because of the depth, uniqueness and international nature of the TEG roster, Viva awarded the entire package to the TEG directors. TEG was able to communicate effectively to the networks youth audience, employing a combination of several design techniques graphics featured on the channel. MK12, Lobo and Nakd also composed and produced the spots original music in-house.
MK12 designed three packages to help promote Vivas video countdown specials, including ?US Top 20, ?Retro Top 10, and ?Euro Top 20. Using the shows themes as a starting point, MK12 incorporates tongue-in-cheek American cultural references, like towering grain silos in the shape of soda cups and a twangy country soundtrack for ?US Top 20. In ?Retro Top 10, the setting is a record store, as a collage of famous album imagery from bands like the B52s, Kraftwerk, and The Rolling Stones, shift in and out of frame. ?Euro Top 20 takes 1950s-era footage of young travelers zipping through the Old Country on Vespa scooters, and superimposes this action against a vintage postcard-like background.
To promote Vivas live ?Interaktiv program, Lobos spot of the same name pans out to the street from within an apartment window, where a guitar player practices in his bedroom. Everything gets an animated treatment - from the pulsating band stickers on the guitar and the logos on the passing delivery van, to the buttons on a bystanders backpack. Abstract animated line drawings dominate in the ?Album Top 20 and ?Album Top 100 spots, taking imagery from famous rock albums, such as David Bowies Ziggy Stardust and Kraftwerks The Mix, and artfully suspends them in mid-air as twirling, twisting graphics. The ?Neu show open features a CG package being unwrapped, revealing the contents, a set of three letters: ?n, ?e and ?u.
Nakds promos include ?Party Mix and ?UK Top 20. ?Party Mixs running theme is the ubiquitous party-mix tape, which is incorporated in each scene as an animated line drawing atop live-action footage. The ?UK Top 20 spot emulates sprocket-rimmed film frames scrolling by one by one. Each frame encases drawings, animation and portraits of typical English subculture, including mohawked punk rockers, soccer hooligans and mods, set along to a British-accented voiceover.
Artist collective and design lab MK12 was founded in the summer of 2000 and is located in Kansas City, MO.
