TANDBERG Television Brings IPTV Solutions to Supercomm

Advanced compression and platforms enable HDTV and on-demand entertainment (June 09, 2005)

TANDBERG Television comes to Supercomm 2005 with a variety of new platforms and product enhancements that together create the most powerful and competitive IPTV business models for telcos to date. Telcos interested in bundling a complete broadcast television experience (standard definition TV, HDTV and on-demand entertainment) with traditional services to compete with cable and satellite can turn to TANDBERG Television (McCormick Place, Chicago, June 6-9) for the advanced compression and on-demand solutions they need to build their triple play business.

At Supercomm 2005, the company is supporting its leadership in advanced compression with a display of its first-to-market high definition (HD) products for MPEG-4 AVC and Windows Media Video 9 (Microsofts implementation of VC-1, the proposed SMPTE standard). These groundbreaking advances in bit-rate efficient encoding offer telcos a potent weapon to compete with recent HDTV advances in satellite TV. TANDBERG Television is also showcasing its award-winning, on-demand products under its new N2 On-Demand Solutions brand, poised to help telcos build an on-demand platform that rivals those offered by cable operators. N2 On-Demand Solutions is the companys latest product line, featuring a range of products for content production, inventory management, and program distribution, is an integral part of its expansion into the on-demand entertainment world.

?As the competition between direct-to-home broadcast television increases, there is a growing need for telcos to differentiate their services from cable and satellite to attract more subscribers. This means growing beyond traditional scheduled, standard definition programming, said Braxton Jarratt, Vice President of Marketing of TANDBERG Television Inc. ?With more than a decade of real-world MPEG-2 expertise to build on, TANDBERG Television continues to develop breakthrough achievements in advanced compression, first with standard definition and now HD. We believe that our multi-channel IPTV encoding solutions for both HD and SD will meet and surpass the stringent quality requirements that telcos require today and will help them achieve new revenue levels using the power, flexibility and bandwidth efficiency afforded by advanced compression. And with N2 On-Demand Solutions, we have a strong range of products especially well-suited to the IPTV market, from content creation to content management that will enable these players to build profitable on-demand businesses.

TANDBERG Television leads the market with over 500 SD and HD advanced encoders shipped worldwide. In addition, more than 3000 TANDBERG MPEG-2 encoders have been shipped with simple upgrade capabilities to advanced video encoding. Supercomm audiences will see TANDBERG Televisions EN5990 MPEG-4 AVC and EN5980 Windows Media Video 9 (VC-1) HD encoders, both based on the groundbreaking TANDBERG Television HD Intelligent Compression Engine (ICE), for the first time. Also receiving its Supercomm debut is the EN5930 MPEG-4 AVC encoder for standard definition (SD) television.

Visitors to TANDBERG Televisions Supercomm booth can see separate MPEG-4 AVC and Windows Media Video 9 (VC-1) multi-channel IPTV encoding solutions for TV over DSL, plus an integrated TANDBERG/Microsoft TV IPTV Edition demonstration. The live demonstrations show how telcos can truly compete with cable and satellite operators today by using advanced compression to send multiple channels into the home and feed multiple TV sets. The bandwidth efficiency afforded by MPEG-4 AVC and Windows Media Video 9 has the potential to double the capacity compared to the previous MPEG-2 telco video model of sending two channels into the home. The company is also showing a live, fully integrated IPTV demonstration combining the TANDBERG Television EN5920 standard definition encoder for Windows Media 9 (VC-1) Series encoder with Microsoft TV IPTV Edition. Attendees can view the outstanding video quality produced by TANDBERG Televisions superior advanced encoding combined with the next-generation user experiences enabled by the Microsoft software platform.

The N2 On-Demand Solutions range is fully integrated with TANDBERG Televisions market leading MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and Windows Media Video 9 (VC-1) video compression systems. The complete inventory of solutions is ideal for telcos seeking to launch advanced services such as video-on-demand (VoD) that provide stiffer competition to cable operators. Among the products being highlighted at Supercomm are: Xport Producer for manual and automated encoding and VOD metadata preparation for local VOD content; MediaPath Secure Content Delivery System; AdPoint, a complete management solution for non-linear advertising; OpenStream Digital Services Platform for managing VOD services across multiple vendors and platforms; and MediaPoint Asset Management System for centrally managing the receipt of VOD content from multiple program sources.

TANDBERG Television has also upgraded its range of professional receivers to include the robust PRO-MPEG Forward Error Correction (FEC) scheme that has grown from leading industry forums, such as the Video Services Forum and PRO-MPEG Forums. TANDBERG Television has added this scheme to its TT1260 standard definition and TT1280 high definition receivers, and TT6120 format conversion devices. TANDBERG Television is at the forefront of the launch of industry standard products using this solution and is demonstrating an end-to-end system correcting induced errors. Visitors to the booth can compare video quality across two monitors: one displaying blocky images with impairments due to a lack of FEC, and a second screen showing the impact of FEC and how it eliminates impairments. The continuous demonstration shows how TANDBERG Television is using these advances to give telcos more power against satellite competition in the contribution and distribution market.
