Superbowl Broadcast To Use Sony MVS-8000 Switcher

Versatile switcher to operate in 720P mode (February 03, 2005)

Sony's MVS-8000 production switcher will be used in NEP's SuperShooter 24 mobile unit this weekend during the broadcast of the NFL championship game between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. The multi-format switcher will operate in 720P mode to support the main game broadcast, further demonstrating the switcher's flexibility. In 2004, four MVS-8000 switchers supported the game in a 1080i environment, handling the pre- and post-game shows, tape release and the game itself.

Freelance technical director Joe Abbenda, who has worked on ABC's "Monday Night Football" for several years in addition to other high-profile football broadcasts, will be operating the MVS-8000 and is impressed by the Sony switcher's intuitive operation and ease of use.

"Considering this is such a high-profile event and this is the first time I'm using the switcher, I feel completely comfortable with its overall architecture and its menus," Abbenda said. "We're providing additional cameras and tape machines to the main game truck, and I'll also be using the switcher to perform various multi-box effects, using the internal DMEs. I can do a four-box effect, or two-box in sync effects, so we really are using the switcher to its fullest capability."

Abbenda noted the switcher's ability to operate in 720P mode adds an extra layer of flexibility that comes in handy during an event such as this.

"You have to be compatible with the main game truck," he said. "The switcher's multi-format design and ability to handle different frame rates make it a very powerful live production tool that's not limiting in any way."

In addition to the Sony switchers, a variety of Sony VTRs will also be used this weekend during the broadcast.

"This game is one of the biggest stages for television broadcast production," said Rob Willox, general manager for content creation in Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Production Systems Division. "Our multi-format live production technology is the perfect fit for this, and will help to add an extra layer of excitement and reality for viewers in a way never seen before."
