Stock Photos in Motion

Johnnie Travis of Bluestream Productions works on his latest television commercial using Adobe Creative Suite 2 software and the new Adobe Stock Photos service.
Video producers are often under tight time and budget constraints, yet theyre tasked with creating videos that rival the sophistication of Hollywood productions. Whether they are delivering television commercials or industrial videos, producers typically combine live-action footage with still imagery, artwork, visual effects, and animations to meet the eye-catching expectations of their clients and viewing audiences.

Achieving this level of sophistication isnt always easy. For one thing, videographers do not always have the budget, time, or resources to obtain all the visuals they need from live shoots. And, even if they have access to substantial budgets and time, they typically need to augment live footage with high-quality still shots and stock photography to illustrate concepts or add visual flair.

Bluestream Productions completed postproduction on a video project for ad agency Anderson Partners?client Phoenix Systems, a concrete form manufacturer. Bluestream relied on Adobe Stock Photos to find images of both an unfinished and a finished basement.
Integrating stock photos
Bluestream Productions, a company that produces TV commercials, industrial videos, and DVDs for a diverse client base ranging from Godfathers Pizza to concrete forms manufacturer Phoenix Systems, often incorporates stock photography into videos. ?When were in postproduction we typically spend hours poring over various online stock photo libraries to find just the images we need, says Johnnie Travis, president and chief editor for Bluestream Productions.

Then Travis discovered a new service that dramatically improved his workflow: Adobe Stock Photos. Available with Adobe Creative Suite 2, Adobe Stock Photos enables Travis to manage the entire process of integrating royalty-free stock photo images into his video production process. From within Adobe Bridge, an Adobe Creative Suite 2 application that lets him sort and manage all of his images and artwork from a central location, he uses Adobe Stock Photos to search across multiple stock image libraries. The libraries are from some of the best suppliers in the stock photo business, including Comstock and Photodisc. He can try photos from a variety of sources by downloading comp images and storing them in Adobe Bridge. ?The integration of Adobe Stock Photos with Adobe Bridge and other applications in Adobe Creative Suite 2 makes me far more productive, says Travis. ?Using Adobe Stock Photos, I can download a comp image, drag it into one of my Adobe applications, and preview the final look of my project within minutes. The sheer speed of this process has literally revolutionized my workflow.

Putting images in motion
Travis can double-click downloaded comps to edit them in Adobe Photoshop® CS2 or bring them into Adobe After Effects to animate them or composite them into video sequences. Once he has made his selection he can purchase the high-resolution, royalty-free images directly from within Adobe Creative Suite 2 applications using a single integrated shopping cart and one image license agreement within Adobe Stock Photos. Adding to the convenience of the service, Adobe Stock Photos retains data such as image ID and supplier, even if the image is edited or renamed.
?Being able to use Adobe Stock Photos to track which images were purchased for which projects saves me a ton of time when I am invoicing my clients, says Travis.

Variety saves the day
Adobe Stock Photos has now become a mainstay tool in Travis workflow. Bluestream used Adobe Stock Photos to complete postproduction on a video project for ad agency Anderson Partners client Phoenix Systems, a concrete form manufacturer based in Omaha, Nebraska. Slated to be shown at an industry convention, the video required images of
an unfinished basement as well as a finished basement. Using Adobe Bridge to access Adobe Stock Photos, Travis quickly found the high quality images he needed. ?What I like most about Adobe Stock Photos is its advanced search feature that allows me to select color, illustration, layout, and format, says Travis. ?It cuts my search time in half.Travis purchased one low- and one high-resolution file and imported them into After Effects to apply a ?Ken Burns-style animation simulating a camera zoom. ?Adobe Stock Photos saved the day by enabling me to easily access a huge variety of photos and customize my search to find just what I needed, very quickly, says Travis.

In need of royalty-free stock images of fresh produce, Bluestream Productions turned to Adobe Stock Photos. After finding appropriate images on Adobe Stock Photos, Bluestream easily integrated them into this TV spot for Godfather?s Pizza.
Saving on shoots
Travis also used Adobe Stock Photos in producing a television commercial for national pizza chain Godfathers Pizza. To complete the commercial, Travis needed images of fresh produce?tomatoes, mushrooms, onions?to add a scene into the spot. The deadline was only one day away, leaving no time for a photo shoot. And, according to Travis, an additional photo shoot would have cost at least $5,000?an amount not in the budget. Using Adobe Bridge and Adobe Stock Photos, Travis quickly found the necessary images and modified them in Photoshop CS2 to make them fit into the scene.

?Adobe Stock Photos is perfect for integrating images into video productions when an existing shot is not available and I need a stock photo of exceptional quality as soon as possible, says Travis. Ideal for Bluestream and other postproduction businesses, Adobe Stock Photos provides an easy, timesaving solution that integrates with other Adobe products, enabling the successful completion of deadline-driven projects. ?My business is all about meeting tight budgets and deadlines, while delivering quality that exceeds client expectations, says Travis. ?Thats exactly what Adobe Stock Photos and Adobe Creative Suite 2 help me accomplish.
