Steinberg Ships Nuendo 1.6

Cubase SL released for Windows; Mac version coming in Q4 By Dave Nagel
Steinberg has released Nuendo 1.6, the latest version of the company's audio production system. The latest version offers several enhancements to existing features, as well as some new functionality, including VST System Link and 192 kHz support. It's available as a free download for current customers.

The major new feature in 1.6 is VST System Link, which is a technology that allows several computers to work together on a single project using a standard digital audio connection. It uses ASIo to send sample-accurate sync information, MIDI and control audio data over the connection. And it supports cross-platform environments.

Other new features include 192 kHz support and import and export of AES 31 EDLs, enabling projects created in Nuendo to be transferred to other professional systems that support the protocol such as Euphonix, Fairlight or SadiE. Version 1.6 also adds support for full-screen video on Windows-based systems only at present.

Nuendo 1.6 is freely downloadable for current customers. For new customers, it runs $1,299.

In other Steinberg news, the company has also started shipping the Windows version of Cubase SL, as promised. The software will ship for Mac OS X in the fourth quarter. Cubase SL is the successor to Cubase VST and adopts the Cubase SX look and feel. It's targeted toward project studios, including digital audio, MIDI sequencing, MIDI input and processing tools, virtual instruments and a library of effects. Steinberg says the new version incorporates more efficient use of current processors and adds several new and enhanced features. These include:

  • VST System Link;
  • Graphic automation for all parameters;
  • Loop editing with automatic tempo matching, groove extraction ;
  • Musical real-time MIDI processing (arpeggiator, step sequencer etc.);
  • A complete set of virtual instruments (drums, bass, synthesizer);
  • Waldorf synthesizer technology;
  • Quadra Fuzz by Craig Anderton;
  • Extensive set of virtual effect processors;
  • Unlimited Undo/Redo;
  • Offline Process History for all integrated audio processes;
  • 24-bit / 96 kHz audio;
  • Cubase VST 5.x project import.

Cubase SL runs roughly $500. Upgrades from Cubase VST will cost about $200. Those who purchased VST March 1 or later will be able to upgrade for about $100. Upgrades will also be available from Cubase SL to Cubase SX. For more information, visit
