Standoff kills NH police chief; 2 officers stable

Officers hurt in NH standoff now in stable condition; chief killed just days before retiring By The Associated Press

GREENLAND, N.H. (AP) ' A hospital official says two New Hampshire police detectives who suffered gunshot wounds to the chest in the same gunfire that killed a police chief during a standoff are in stable condition.

Dr. Timothy Pike, chief medical officer at Portsmouth Hospital, said Friday afternoon the officers were comfortable and with their families.

The officers, who were wearing bulletproof vests, were part of the state attorney general's drug task force. They were trying to serve a search warrant on Cullen Mutrie around 6 p.m. Thursday when Mutrie opened fire. Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney was killed and four detectives from other departments were injured. Mutrie and a woman were found dead.

Pike said 33-year-old Scott Kukesh and 34-year-old Jeremiah Murphy of Rochester were stable. Two other officers have been released.
