Square Box Systems Releases CatDV Workgroup Server 3.5Cost effective multi-user video logging and archiving system (August 18, 2005)
Square Box Systems Ltd today announced the immediate availability of version 3.5 of their CatDV Workgroup Server software, designed to complement their CatDV Pro application and provide a cost effective multi-user video logging and archiving system.
The CatDV product family comprises a complete, scalable range of solutions. CatDV Pro 4.0, released in June 2005, is a desktop video logging and media cataloging application with advanced movie analysis and metadata support. For an entry level system, CatDV 4.0 can be used as a standalone, single user application which saves catalogs locally to disk. With the addition of CatDV Workgroup Server, however, CatDV Pro will save its details of media files and clip logging data to a central shared database instead, allowing a production team to build up a central repository of clips that may be searched and updated by multiple users concurrently.
Each thumbnail clip in the database could represent a finished piece, such as a trailer or promo clip, a news report, or an edited program. Or CatDV might be used early on in the production, with automatic scene detection being applied to master tapes to build up a database of individual shots and scenes of source material.
Using the workgroup server, a production assistant might digitize tapes and enter log notes on one workstation, the producer might search for, preview and select the shots he wants to include on another, while the editor takes the selection and exports a batch list to an NLE application such as Final Cut Pro or AVID on a third machine.
Each clip in the database is described and annotated by a rich selection of metadata, including clip name, notes, tape or reel identifier, in and out timecode values, recording date, and technical metadata describing the file format. Additionally, each clip has a thumbnail poster image, and can refer to a low-resolution video preview. These previews are compressed to as little as 100MB per hour, small enough to allow a complete archive of thousands of hours of material to be maintained online, while still allowing any clip to be instantly accessed and played back to see if it is of interest.
The CatDV Workgroup Server 3.5 is written in Java and is compatible with a wide variety of server platforms. This version of the server features compatibility with both CatDV Pro 3.0 and 4.0 clients, and has a new simplified universal installer. A single installer is provided which supports Mac OS X, Windows NT/2000/ME/XP, and generic flavours of Linux and Unix. The CatDV Workgroup Server is compatible with both MySQL 4.0 and Oracle 10g relational databases.
CatDV Live HTML Publisher is an optional add-on to the CatDV Workgroup Server that extends access to the CatDV database to any web browser via an HTML interface. The Live HTML Publisher can be extended by anyone with web programming skills to integrate with other Intranet-based web applications.
Wherever possible, open standards are used to maximise interoperability with other applications and ensure as wide a range of platforms as possible are supported.
The CatDV Pro 4.0 client software is available for Macintosh (Mac OS X 10.2 or later) and for Windows machines (Windows 2000, ME or XP), running QuickTime 6.5 or later. Single copies of the CatDV Pro 4.0 client software cost just $275 per seat, with multi-user license bundles that offer significant savings on this price available also. The CatDV Workgroup Server starts at just $695. (Prices quoted are in US dollars.)
