Square Box Systems Ltd today announced the immediate availability of CatDV Live Capture Plus, a major new capture utility for transferring video images from Digital Video tape onto a computer.

Utilising advanced patent-pending technology, Live Capture Plus continuously monitors the signal being captured and automatically rewinds the retries the capture if any errors are detected, ensuring that dropped frames and similar errors are a problem of the past.

"Dropped frames and other glitches during capture mess up the timecode and are a major headache for video editors", says Rolf Howarth, CEO of Square Box Systems Ltd. "With Live Capture Plus they can now be sure of getting frame accurate captures, every time. Coupled with automatic scene splitting and creation of CatDV catalogs, it's an invaluable addition to every editor's toolbox. Simply pop in a tape and let it go!"

Live Capture Plus is designed to capture an entire DV tape unattended. Files are automatically split on scene boundaries and FireWire device control is used to pause the tape if the compression queue is full or to back the tape up slightly and retry if any errors are detected. It will even neatly rewind a tape back to the beginning when it reaches the end.

Live Capture Plus will record files as full quality DV QuickTime movies (for use in Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express), as DV Streams (for use in iMovie), or compress them to any other QuickTime-supported format, including MPEG-4 and the new H.264 codec (requires QuickTime 7).

Live Capture Plus can be used as a standalone application or integrated with the CatDV 4.0 media database application. When used with CatDV it automatically builds a tape index, complete with thumbnails and preview movies (low resolution proxies), which the user can keep as a permanent record of a tape's contents. A one hour tape requires as little as 200MB of disk space in preview form.

CatDV Live Capture Plus 1.0 is available now for Mac OS X 10.3 or later. It requires a Macintosh with built-in FireWire and a DV deck or camcorder with IEEE 1394 interface. Live Capture Plus is very aggressively priced at just 29+VAT or US $49. A free demo (captures are limited to 5 minutes) is available for download from the web site.
