Splash Launches Online Adventure Guides for Local ExperiencesSplash Introduces a Fun Way to Find and Organize Experiences by Following What Local Experts and Visitors Are Doing (May 08, 2012)
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/08/12 -- Launching in open beta today, Splash is a free web service that offers a simple way for people to organize, share and discover unique things to do in destinations throughout the U.S., based on experiences posted by local experts and friends. Splash is an adventure guide for "what to do" in your backyard or while traveling that is current, accessible and easy to organize.
Different from one-dimensional review sites or out of date tour book recommendations, Splash allows people to connect through suggestions and stories about untapped places and experiences such as the best place for a Sunday bike ride or an amazing spot to check out local street art.
Locals post photos of their favorite activities and the hidden gems their city has to offer and then organize them into virtual Guides with tips about best times and how to participate. For instance, a Guide called "Top 25 Activities for Kids in San Francisco" collects the top fun spots to entertain and educate kids. A new visitor can print out this Guide or pick a few activities to add onto their own Guide mixed with other ideas from their family to plan their vacation.
"As an avid adventure seeker I am constantly finding new experiences near San Francisco that I encourage friends to try out. At the same time, I love learning about new vistas, artwork, dance nights and beautiful kayak spots from different people that I would never find on my own," said Michael Powers, a former Product Lead for top video site YouTube and founder and CEO of Splash. "I wanted to create a service that allows people to be inspired to try a new adventure."
Splash aims to be the one stop shop for everything to do in a city or destination by:
- Capturing photos and descriptions of everything locals find interesting
- Providing Guide creation tools that make it easy to create your own "Best of" themes
- Gathering ratings of top activities
- Keeping tabs of activities that you wish to do "Someday" and reminding you at regular intervals to schedule them
- Creating social connections by following the adventures of interesting locals
The introduction of Splash comes at a time when U.S. online sales of trip activities are forecast to surpass total sales of U.S. online leisure travel. Trip activities account for $27 billion of the U.S. travel market, larger than the rental car market. At the same time, information and reviews about activities are scarce or out of date.
