Special Blend and Funky Pumpkin Put Motion and Magic into: 30 for Glitter Lava LaunchUpstart Digital Design Studio Creates Tactile Logo and Transitions for National Campaign Targeting Tweens (December 15, 2008)
DMN Newswire--2008-12-15--West Coast digital design studio Special Blend and New York City production company Funky Pumpkin teamed up to create a high energy and vividly designed 30-second spot kicking off the national launch for tween-targeted craft compound Glitter Lava. Working from opposite coasts, Special Blend Creative Director Kathy Lajvardi and Funky Pumpkin Executive Producer Helen Polise successfully captured the fun and creative spirit of the new-to-market product, even injecting the same tactile feel of the compound into the logo letters.
"We let Special Blend rip with the opening logos," points out Polise, who also worked with Lajvardi on national spots for the recent launch of Disneys High School Musical Karaoke Microphone and Huru Humi, an interactive talking doll with a digital face and changeable expressions.
"We just gave them broad stroked directions and let them put their special spin on the designs," says Polise. For Glitter Lava, a craft item that kids can use to sculpt into anything from jewelry to insects, the client, Horizon Group USA, wanted a high energy, colorful spot depicting an "upbeat world of lava," according to Polise. They got just that with Funky Pumpkins Edward Rupps direction and Special Blends imaginative and attention-grabbing opening logo treatment and transitions.
Special Blend first created concept boards and animations for the spot using the product artwork as the springboard for design. Designing the logo in 3D, the team infused as much sparkle and glitter in the letters as possible by actually putting glitter inside the words to get the desired effect. For the transitional elements, they devised shimmering comets that sweep in throughout the piece.
"It was important to establish a magical environment that felt very sparkly and crafty from the outset," emphasizes Lajvardi, who launched Special Blend just shy of eight months ago and has steadily been attracting new clients in film, TV, advertising, and non-traditional media since then. "The glittery, hip-looking open grabs the attention of tween girls and boys and shows all the great things that can be created with the product." "Working with Special Blend on the opening logo treatment was a pleasure," affirms Polise. "They successfully brought the logo to life within the feel of the brand itself. In this case, the logo actually has the feel of the lava!" Other recent work from Special Blend includes the opening titles for the recently aired BET movie and DVD "I Tried" (Interscope Records and Codeblack Entertainment LLC), a complete rebranding and design makeover for City Explorer TV, and original branding for the launch of Luxury Explorer TV Network. Also for Funky Pumpkin, Special Blend created the opening logo treatment for the launch of PJ Sparkles, an interactive doll whose heart beats and lights up. Airdate is scheduled for spring 2009.
