Speaking of Simplification... Nextel

By Gary Kayye, CTS
Heres part three in a series of articles designed to highlight products that accomplish what I think is a need for simplifying the ProAV world with simple, powerful products.

Each product or company I feature in this series, I believe, is making a significant contribution to simplifying ProAV technology. No, these products cant totally replace whats in the market today, but they might just live by that 80/20 rule. And, if I were them, I would certainly be happy with 80% of the market applications, wouldnt you?

OK, these products arent necessarily technological breakthroughs; technological wonders and some of them could even be considered ugly. But, they do have one thing in common: simplification.

Finally, it should also be mentioned that none of the companys products highlighted in this series are clients of Kayye Consulting, Inc.

Todays product: Nextel Cell Phones with 2-way radio service

Always an emotional decision, the selection of the company-wide cell-phone service provider is a big deal. Most of us use cell phones more than we use our desk phones!

And, with the plight of the systems integration company being one where there are designers at the client doing site inspections, sales people outside selling and installers on-site integrating the gear, the need for efficient, cost-effective cell phone service is something an AV Integration firm should evaluate with an open mind every year.

In addition, keep in mind that cell phone companies install new transmission towers at a rate of more than two per day (industry-wide), adding service coverage.

So, what might not have looked good last year might be the ultimate this year.

Enter Nextel.

Nextel is the ONLY cell phone company, in my opinion, that AV Integrators should use -- assuming the coverage is in your area. Not only does it include, nationally, the cheapest rates on the market, but each phone has a unique feature thats a must for a Systems Integration firm: FREE 2-way radio service. Set up to work like a walkie-talkie feature in a radio, the 2-way service provides coverage in most areas that includes two states or at least 600 miles. That means, in most cases, that you can talk, for free, to anyone and everyone in your network zone and company.

And, Nextel now offers the ability to receive, reply and compose e-mails, browse the Internet and store your entire Contact database (if using Microsoft Outlook) on the phone itself. Making the ability to call any one of your contacts something you can do at the touch of one button.

So, if Nextel has service where you are, switch. Its one of those things that will certainly make your company more efficient and simplify accounting of all your phones.
