Sorenson Squeezes Mac OS X

Company releases first VBR encoder for new system, updates CODEC By Dave Nagel
Sorenson Media today released Squeeze and an update to the Sorenson 3 video CODEC. Squeeze becomes the first variable bit rate encoder for Mac OS X. Sorenson 3.1 adds support for Mac OS X, as well as multiprocessor support and one-pass encoding.

Sorenson Squeeze is designed for encoding and delivering QuickTime content for streaming and progressive downloads. It has a drag and drop interface for simple encoding functions but also offers advanced controls for experienced encoders.

We reported back in July that Squeeze would be available in two versions, a standard edition and a professional edition. But as of today, there is only one version. (We'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.)

Sorenson says that Squeeze is not designed as a competitor to products like Cleaner (now owned by Discreet). Rather, it's a tool designed for those with less experience in encoding who need a simple solution without all the features of Cleaner. It offers two-pass variable bit rate encoding, as well as "fast-pass" VBR, which, according to the company, is almost as good as two-pass and significantly faster. It also supports variable bit rate for MP3 encoding; batch processing; multiple rate encoding; A/V filters; stored presets; and input from AVI, MOV and DV files.

A Mac version of Sorenson Broadcaster 1.5 is also supposed to be in the works. We'll bring you an update on this soon as well.

Sorenson Squeeze is available at an introductory price of $149. (The regular price will be $299.) Sorenson Video 3.1 is a free update for Sorenson 3 customers. As a stand-alone product, it sells for $499. For users of Sorenson Video prior to version 3, the 3.1 upgrade runs $249. Purchased together, Squeeze and Sorenson Video 3.1 run $499.
