Sony To Ship 24x CD-RW LineMac models due out in November
The forthcoming drives will be available in configurations ranging from EIDE and USB 2.0 to FireWire. One of the models will also include a slot for Memory Stick media, Sony's own technology that competes with SmartMedia, CompactFlash and the rest.
With this new line, Sony seems to have dropped its Discribe recording utility in favor of B's Recorder Gold and Dantz Retrospect Express. The drives also include ArcSoft PhotoBase, ArcSoft PhotoStudio and ArcSoft VideoImpression.
For whatever reason, the internal EIDE drives will not include Macintosh software, while the USB 2.0 and FireWire models will. The Sony CD-RW ATAPI (EIDE) internal drive (CRX175A/A1) will be available in October, while the Memory Stick model (CRX175M/A1) will be available in November with estimated U.S. retail prices of $179 and $229 respectively.
The USB 2.0 (CRX1750U/A2) and FireWire (CRX1750L/A2) external drives will also be available in November. The CRX1750U/A2 will be offered at an estimated U.S. retail price of $279, while the CRX170L/A2 will retail at an estimated $299. All of the models offer 6 MB per second sustained read speeds and 3.6 MB per second write speeds for data transfers. The drives include a 2 MB buffer and support burst transfers of 480 megabits per second in the USB 2.0 configuration and 400 megabits per second in the FireWire configuration. The USB 2.0 model is backward compatible with USB 1.1 (standard on Macs), but, owing to USB 1.1's slow bus speeds, the maximum write/rewrite speeds drop to 4x.
