Sony Shows Portable CD-RW/DVD-ROM

Battery-operated drive doubles as stand-alone MP3 player By Dave Nagel
Sony has introduced a new portable CD-RW and DVD-ROM drive. The new model, the MPD-AP20U, is a battery-powered unit that also doubles as a stand-alone audio player for MP3 and WAV files, as well as CDs.

The new drive uses a USB 2.0 interface (backwards compatible with USB 1.1) for connecting to Macintosh and Windows systems and also includes a software suite for both. It can burn to CD-R and CD-RW media and also read DVD media. It writes CD-Rs at 24x, writes CD-RWs at 10x and reads CDs at 24x. It also reads DVDs at 8x. The drive incorporates a Memory Stick media slot for copying and reading files.

The drive comes bundled with software for Mac and Windows, including B's Recorder Gold, Retrospect Express, ArcSoft PhotoBase and ArcSoft PhotoStudio. The drive will be available in November for about $300. For more information, visit http://www.sony.com.
