Sony Intros USB 2.0 CD-RW Drives

High-end model offers 40x write speed By Dave Nagel
Sony has introduced two new models in its lineup of high-speed CD-RW drives. The models sport USB 2.0 interfaces and offer write speeds up to 40x. They're available for Macintosh and Windows systems.

The higher-end CRX1950U model is an external device offering speeds of 40x (write), 12x (rewrite) and 48x (read). It's backwards compatible with USB 1.1 devices and includes a range of cross-platform software utilities. Its maximum data rate is 480 megabits per second with a random access time of 100 ms and a buffer memory of 2 MB. It's available now for $179.


The other new model is a slim, portable combination CD-RW and DVD-ROM drive. It offers a 24x maximum write speed, 10x rewrite speed, 24x read speed (CD) and 8x read speed (DVD). It offers a transfer rate of 480 megabits per second, a buffer memory of 8 MB and a random access time of 160 ms. It will be available in uly for $299.
